Read this thinking we were making a trip to South Carolina, but have since decided to go to Mississippi instead. 156 pages general information, history, arts, etc., 114 on cities: Aiken, Anderson, Beaufort, Camden, Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Greenville, Greenwood, Rock Hill, Spartanburg, Sumter; and remainder on road trips.
Found interesting that in late 1930s some counties had three separate school systems: white, colored, and one for those of mixed blood who were not accepted by the blacks, but were barred by law from the white schools, e.g. Native Americans. Mentions Quaker migration in early 1800s to northern states due to dispute on slavery.
Several chapters on the arts, including six pages on literature. Authors mentioned include: John C. Calhoun, William Gilmore Simms, Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, Henry Timrod, Paul Hamilton Hayne, John Bennett, Archibald Rutledge, Julia Peterkin, Samuel Gaillard Stoney, Elliott White Springs, and Hervey Allen.
